April 10 – Rest day in Dingboche and acclimatization hike

We started the day with a hike up a nearby mountain and the team did amazingly well – going way higher than most trekking teams. The views are 360 degrees with mountains in every direction. Hiking to a higher elevation and returning to a lower elevation to sleep helps our bodies adjust to the attitude better. Some of us are suffering with side effects like headaches, lack of appetite, nausea, and difficulty sleeping.  To counter the side effects, we try and stay well hydrated, eat blander foods, take ibuprofen and altitude medication.

The teahouse we are staying in tonight has hot showers and internet that we can pay extra for. They also charge us to utilize electricity to charge our electronic devices. They supply us beds with pillows. I sleep on the bed inside my sleeping bag. We have a variety of food to choose from including Nepalese dishes and Western cuisine. They offer us ginger lemon tea at every meal which helps settle our stomachs. The temperatures are dropping as we keep moving to higher and higher altitudes. We are wearing more layers like a fleece jacket and puffy down jackets.
